teaching philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is influenced by my education as well as mentors that I have gained knowledge from. I believe that each person has a unique ability and I am here to provide a secure, stimulating environment to grow intellectually as well as socially. I find that my mission as a teacher is threefold: 1) Establishing a collaborative environment for individuals to learn by acting as a guide 2) Allowing individuals to find their enthusiasm by using their natural curiosity 3) Providing a strong foundation for learning by promoting respect for all learning objectives, activities, and people

My role as a teacher is to guide and provide access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information. Students in my classroom will search for knowledge to find answers to their questions by practicing the skills needed to thrive in society. In my experience as an instructor, I provide students access to hands-on activities and allow adequate time to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied. This creates an opportunity for collaborative discovery and individual construction of knowledge to occur in and outside the classroom. For example, I will ask students to share ideas about using a specific method in order to accomplish an objective. I then reinforce the lesson by offering the preferred method and allow students time to figure out what works best in certain situations.

Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. I focus on developing a curriculum around student interests that foster intrinsic motivation which has shown to stimulate the passion to learn. I encourage student interest by inviting students to engage in dialogue/ open discussions about the lessons and units of study. When students are to able generate ideas and set goals based on those ideas lessons and activities are enriched beyond anything that I could have created or imagined myself. When students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals.

One of my hopes as an educator is to inspire a love of learning in my students by sharing my own passion for learning with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, dedicated individuals who are excited about working with students. As an instructor, I will respect and be sensitive to their needs to ensure quality education. As a professional, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth.I am constantly evolving as an instructor, ever adapting to the needs of my students in order to be the best educator and example that I can be.
